Summary

  • Jasmine Gould explains how she transitioned from business school and office jobs to construction work as a Local 3 electrician, entering the union through the Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) program. She shares her fearful first encounter with an electric saw, and how, as an apprentice, she learned on the job from her foreman and her peers. She compares being a union member to being part of a big family, which has its good and bad points, but which ultimately supports its members. She talks about how she loves to participate in the Local 3 clubs, such as the Latimer club. Although she hates dust and the smells of the construction site, she talks about how much she loves learning new skills, and how, as a woman electrician, she feels empowered and inspired.
