Title
- Extraordinary Rendition: Constitutional Issues
Summary
- The Law Library hosted a panel discussion on "Extraordinary Rendition: Constitutional Issues" as a part of the Law Library's Speaker Series and the 175th anniversary of the Law Library of Congress. After 9/11, the Bush administration engaged in what is called "extraordinary rendition" -- the transfer of suspected terrorists to countries known to employ harsh interrogation techniques that may rise to the level of torture. The impact of these policies on constitutional principles, presidential power and congressional checks was the subject of this panel discussion. The panel also examined the role of the judiciary in the cases of Khaled El-Masri and Maher Arar. Congress has held hearings on this topic during the past year.
