  • Joy Harjo reads and discusses her poem "Exile of Memory" on August 5, 2020, from her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Harjo is the 23rd Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, and the first Native American poet to serve in the position. Her nine books of poetry include An American Sunrise, Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings, How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems, and She Had Some Horses. Harjo's memoir Crazy Brave won several awards, including the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction and the American Book Award. She is the recipient of the Ruth Lilly Prize, the Wallace Stevens Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the William Carlos Williams Award, and the United States Artist Fellowship, among other honors. In 2019, she was awarded the Jackson Prize and elected as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
