Title
- Mary Jo (Kulesza) Veluzat and Phillip L. Veluzat interview conducted by Brent A. Bjorkman, 2014-06-24
Summary
- Mary Jo Veluzat, former Assistant Chief of Maintenance, and her partner Phillip Veluzat, former Chief Ranger, have deep, lifelong connections to Mammoth Cave National Park. Mary Jo's father was the Superintendent of the Park, and Phillip is a native of Cave City. Reflecting on her experiences growing up as the child of a ranger, Mary Jo discusses family dynamics and her father's career, and her decision to leave her first job in medical technology and join the National Park Service, too. Her first NPS job involved monitoring radon levels in the caves during the summer, when it was discovered to have a harmful effect on park employees. She took advantage of the ongoing computerization and digitization of park records and began working on the maintenance office budget. Phil Veluzat, a former military policeman, took a job in the NPS as a law enforcement ranger after it began professionalizing in the 1970s. He recounts run-ins with bike gangs, marijuana growers, poachers, thieves, and a particularly rowdy group of campers. Together, the couple discuss changes in the park, including computerization, changing gender dynamics, budget problems, and decreased geographic career mobility.
