About this Item

Title

  • Jameson Wagner interview conducted by Jess Lamar Reece Holler, 2018-06-07

Summary

  • Long-time Adriatico's Pizza night shift manager Jameson Wagner discusses his early childhood in Medina, Ohio; his introduction to restaurant work through front- and back-of-house work at a now-defunct finer-dining establishment in Medina; and his start at Adriatico's Pizza upon moving to Columbus to attend the Ohio State University. Jameson, who is also trained as a sociologist, talks extensively about the dynamics of food service employee worker and management culture, and sets forth several compelling theories about ways that kitchen workers' occupational folklife and socialization contributes to a culture of excellence, cohesion, pride, and sense of personal contributions to the workplace. Jameson discusses the deeply-ingrained role that Adriatico's Pizza has played in campus life; the culture of the night-shift and the pizza kitchen (including bawdy humor); after-work socialization cultures amongst kitchen workers; and Adriatico's unique Sicilian-style dough and massive "Buckeye" pizza size. He talks about wages; his unexpected career at Adriatico's after graduating from college; and the restaurant owner's unique profit-sharing model. Finally. he discusses Adriaticos' pending move to a new location around the corner, since Ohio State University's School of Optometry is seizing the building where the restaurant has stood for the past 30-odd years.
