About this Item
Title
- In Memoriam: Bishop Alfred Robert Tucker, June 19, 1914.
Summary
- "In Memoriam," is the program for the Eucharist and burial service for Bishop Alfred R. Tucker in Durham Cathedral, in northern England, on June 19, 1914, following Tucker's death on June 15. Tucker was born in Woolwich, United Kingdom, on April 1, 1849. He studied art, and at the age of 25 exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy. He entered Oxford University as an undergraduate in 1878 and graduated in 1882, the same year in which he was ordained a deacon in Gloucester Cathedral. In 1890 he wrote to the Church Missionary Society asking to go to East Africa. He served as the Anglican bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1890--99 and as the first bishop of Uganda in 1899--1911. In his many years in Uganda, Tucker encouraged the Ugandan church to develop its own leadership and train its own evangelists. He also promoted education and the introduction of Western medicine into the country. The program is from a bound compilation of ten documents relating to the early history of the Anglican Church in Uganda in the library of Uganda Christian University at Mukono, near Kampala. The university was founded in 1997 by the Anglican Church of Uganda and incorporates Bishop Tucker Theological College, founded in 1913.
