  • Finland framstäldt i teckningar (Finland presented in drawings) is by Zacharias Topelius (1818-98), a prominent Finnish writer, journalist, and professor of history, who consciously sought to create the cultural image of Finland with his writings. The aim of the book, which includes lithographed illustrations by the most famous Finnish artists of the 19th century, was to create a panorama of the history of Finland and of its most memorable places and scenic regions. Selection of the illustrations was based on the author's criteria and selection program. The illustrations are by Johan Knutson, Magnus von Wright, Berndt Lennart Forstén, Pehr Adolf Kruskopf, F.J. Westerling, Adolf Wilhelm Lindeström, and J. Boström (two lithographs do not show the name of the artist). Topelius joined the faculty of the University of Helsinki as professor of Finnish history in 1864 and served as president of the university from 1875 to 1878. He is known as the father of the Finnish historical novel whose works, written in Swedish, are regarded as classics of Finland's national literature.
