Summary

  • One of the characteristics of trade in the Middle Ages in the city of Valencia was that the different occupations were organized in guilds, which, in the 14th century, became trade associations. These associations were entities formed by craftsmen grouped by their artistic and commercial activities. They managed and regulated surplus production and fixed prices. The associations drew up ordinances and contracts that dealt with the requirements to join these organizations and the framework that regulated each trade. These very detailed ordinances, which had to be approved by the municipality or the king, were mandatory for all members of the trade associations. This work comprises the chapters dealing with the passamaners i cordoners (craftsmen embroiderers who produced small sumptuary silk items, such as braids, bags, and buttons, and did needlework). In Valencia this trade peaked in the 16th and 17th centuries. This work, written in Valencian, is bound in parchment and has ornamental trimmings. Page 5 has an illustration depicting the patron of this trade association, the Virgin of Rosario, with the Child.
