  • The map presented here is from the Miller Atlas in the collections of the National Library of France. Produced for King Manuel I of Portugal in 1519 by cartographers Pedro Reinel, his son Jorge Reinel, and Lopo Homem and miniaturist António de Holanda, the atlas contains eight maps on six loose sheets, painted on both sides. One side of this map (folio 2 recto in the atlas) shows Northern Europe, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Iceland, and the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, labeled Mare Congelatu (Frozen Sea). Four ships on the map fly the Portuguese Cross of the Order of Christ as they sail the ocean. There are many heraldic shields; some are black with red devices, others are shown in gold leaf, which is also used to pick out some islands. Many red banners and gold letters identify places by their Latin names, such as Cenabum (Orléans), Lugdunum (Lyon), and Borbetomagus (Worms, Germany). The other side (folio 2 verso) shows the central Atlantic Ocean with the Azores; the right half folio is blank. Insula Viridis is present-day Greenland. The atlas takes its name from Emmanuel Miller, who purchased it in 1855 from a bookseller in Santarém, Portugal. Miller's widow sold it to the National Library of France in 1897.
