Summary
- The Thereza Christina Maria Collection consists of 21,742 photographs assembled by Emperor Pedro II and left by him to the National Library of Brazil. The collection covers a vast range of subjects. It documents the achievements of Brazil and the Brazilian people in the 19th century, as well as includes many photographs from Europe, Africa, and North America. This photograph by the celebrated Brazilian portrait photographer Joaquim José Insley Pacheco (1830-1912) depicts Thereza Christina Maria, the wife of the emperor, in whose honor the emperor insisted that the collection be named. The last empress of Brazil, Thereza Christina (1822-89) was the daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Isabella of Spain. She and Pedro were married for 46 years, from 1842 until her death in 1889.
