- This talk examines the mulitple depictions and the many forms of enslavement presented to the British reading public in the early part of the 18th century. Though "slavery" came to refer most commonly to transatlantic African slavery by the end of the century, in the beginning of the century the term had a far broader meaning. Slavery could be spiritual as well as physical and applied as often to European as to African people.
