About this Item

Title

  • Founder's Day Concert: Party Like It's 1587

Summary

  • A tribute to Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's commitment to fostering performance of Renaissance music in the United States, this evening's triple bill sampled some of the most popular trends and performance styles from the period. The party begins as combined brass choirs of the U.S. Navy Band exult antiphonal music by Italian composers Giovanni Gabrieli and Carlo Gesualdo. On their shawms, sackbuts, dulcians, bagpipes and drums, Piffaro, performing music by Dufay, Ockeghem and Clemens non Papa, gives a taste of the 16th-century equivalent of a modern-day rock band. Boston-based vocal ensemble Blue Heron performs choral gems by Dufay, Ockeghem and Sweelinck. The forces combine for a jubilant finale to the Library's version of a Renaissance fair. Produced by special arrangement with The Music Sales Group/Robert King Music, Eric Crees, and David Miller.
