- - Trinidad was one of the first Hispanic cities in America, was founded by Diego Velazquez and 1514. Hernán Cortés went through the city on their way to Mexico and enlisted men who accompanied him on his campaign of conquest. Sugarcane and the slave trade led to the wealth of the city reflected in the mansions preserved gates, balconies, ironwork and vivid colors of their facades. Trinidad isolation led to the good condition of the small town, recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage in 1988.
