- - El Castillo de los tres Reyes Magos del Morro is a fortress, emblematic of Havana, and is one of the best known images of Latin America. The fortification has origins in 1563 when a tower was built as a reference to the galleons. Guns were added by order of Philip II in 1589, to protect Havana as an strategic point of Spanish colony, against pirates and privateers. In 1762 the British severely damaged the lighthouse and fortification, allowing them to take the city by shooting 20,000 shells and bombs. In 1845 a lighthouse was installed according to the most advanced technology of the time with electricity which still works. Currently there are two restaurants and a bar, and the fortress serves for the realization of cultural events.
