Summary

  • This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 7,761 images from the Federal Theatre Project Collection created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign Theater for the People: Federal Theatre Project playbills. It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign Theater for the People: Federal Theatre Project playbills (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/federal-theatre-project/). The campaign consisted of a selection of then-available online images of digitized content from the Federal Theatre Project Collection (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/collmus.mu000007). The Federal Theatre Project Collection contains documentation for stage productions mounted by the Federal Theatre Project in the period 1935-39. The Federal Theatre Project was the largest and most ambitious effort mounted by the Federal Government to organize and produce theater events. It was an effort of the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to provide work for unemployed professionals in the theater during the Great Depression. The transcription campaign included only the digitized theater programs from the Production Records series of the collection, which cover a wide range of productions from vaudeville sketches to full-length dramas, circus, puppetry, dance works, musicals, and emerging forms like living newspapers. See the Federal Theatre Project digital collection (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/collmus.mu000007) for all available online items for this collection, as well as contextual information, such as finding aids, bibliographic resources, and digital exhibits.
