Other Title

Summary

  • This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 4,638 images of materials representing Mary Ann Arnold, Mary Ann Bickerdyke, Betty Herndon Maury, and Dora Stephens , contained in the John Carvel Arnold Papers, Mary Ann Bickerdyke Papers, Betty Herndon Maury Maury Papers, and Alexander Hamilton Stephens Papers digital collections, respectively. The transcriptions were created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign “Such Eventful Times”: Women and the American Civil War. It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign “Such Eventful Times”: Women and the American Civil War (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/eventful-times/). The campaign consisted of all then-available online images of digitized content from the John Carvel Arnold Papers (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000071), Mary Ann Bickerdyke Papers (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000057), and Betty Herndon Maury Maury Papers (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000074), as well as a selection from the Alexander Hamilton Stephens Papers (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000028). The John Carvel Arnold Papers digital collection, transcribed in its entirety, consists primarily of correspondence from 1864 to 1865 between Arnold and his wife, Mary Ann Arnold, during his Civil War service with Company I, 49th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. The Mary Ann Bickerdyke Papers digital collection, also transcribed in its entirety, documents the life and work of Bickerdyke (1817-1901), a Civil War nurse and agent for the United States Sanitary Commission, through family, general, and special correspondence, as well as subject files. The Betty Herndon Maury Maury Papers digital collection, also transcribed in its entirety, consists of a two-volume diary of Confederate sympathizer Betty Herndon Maury kept from June 3, 1861, to February 18, 1863, while her family lived as refugees, primarily in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The transcribed selection of the Alexander Hamilton Stephens Papers digital collection is a series of letters written by Dora Stephens and other formerly enslaved persons to their former enslaver. These come from the “Letters from Servants” series of the collection. See the digital collection presentations for all available online items for these collections, as well as additional contextual information.
