Other Title

Summary

  • This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 2,462 images from the James A. Garfield Papers digital collection created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign James A. Garfield Diary: “His Confidential Friend.” It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign James A. Garfield Diary: “His Confidential Friend” (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/garfield/). The campaign consisted of a selection of then-available online images of digitized content from the James A. Garfield Papers (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000082). The transcription campaign only included the Diaries series of the collection. Other series in the collection are transcribed in other By the People campaigns. The “Diaries, 1848-1881,” series consists of multiple volumes of a personal diary kept by Garfield from the ages of seventeen to forty-nine, ending when he was shot by an assassin on July 1, 1881. Garfield's diary entries reflect his thoughts and personality, his interests, accomplishments and defeats, and include comments on people, events, life, and society. See the James A. Garfield Papers digital collection (http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000082) for all available online items for this collection, as well as contextual information, such as an index to the collection.

This .CSV is the direct export of the James A. Garfield Diary: “His Confidential Friend” campaign.
