About this Item

Title

  • Harry A. Blackmun oral history interview. Session 6

Summary

  • Harry Blackmun describes his later years on the U.S. Court of Appeals (8th Circuit). He discloses that sometimes the judges weren't upset when the Supreme Court would reverse decisions. His time on that court was set against a backdrop of American unrest, dealing with civil rights issues, racial discrimination, and war demonstrations, but he also had many tax cases which he remembered fondly. In 1970, after being extensively interviewed by the Justice Department, former President Nixon nominated him for a seat on the Supreme Court. After the confirmation hearings, he was quickly confirmed and moved to Rosslyn, Virginia, with his wife, to start his new position. He shares memories of his early days on the Supreme Court and his initial opinions of Hugo Black, William O. Douglas and John Marshall Harlan.
