About this Item

Title

  • Harry A. Blackmun oral history interview. Session 7

Summary

  • Harry Blackmun continues to describe his relationships with Hugo Black, William O. Douglas and John Marshall Harlan. He also explains how his lifelong friend, Chief Justice Burger, still new to the Supreme Court in Blackmun's early days, treaded softly while he gained experience. He briefly describes his thoughts on Potter Stewart, Bryon White and Thurgood Marshall. He speaks about the voting order in conferences and how everything was fairly civil. Blackmun shares details of the procedures in his chambers during those early years and how his first term, October term (OT) 1970, had some "vigorous and important and determinative cases." The following year, after two retirements, William Rehnquist and Lewis F. Powell joined the Supreme Court and he was no longer the junior justice. He ends sharing thoughts on one of his favorite cases, Flood v. Kuhn.
