Summary
- Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Dr. Ristow disusses his undergraduate days at Wisconsin beginning in 1927 and his graduate experience at Oberlin. He describes an AAG (Association of American Geographers) meeting in 1931, when Isaiah Bowman gave his presidential address. He talks about his graduate days at Clark under Clarence Jones et. al., his work at the New York City Library (1937 to 1946), his tenure as Secretary of the ASPG (American Society of Professional Geographers) and later the AAG, and as Chief of the Geography and Map Division at the Library of Congress. He discusses Bob Platt's vision of how the geographic resources of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) could provide the foundation for a Center of Geographic Study and the post-war years in Washington.
