Summary

  • Set in the Limehouse district of London, this is the story of Lucy, a 15-year-old living under the violent, abusive hand of her resentful prizefighter father, Battling Burrows. Driven from her home, she finds love and protection in the home of a gentle Chinese man. Together they begin to discover the joys that life has denied both of them until that time. Then Lucy's father finds her, brutally beats her protector, takes her back home, and, in his rage, kills her. The grief stricken Chinese man avenges Lucy's death and then takes his own life.
