Amo Houghton, former Marine in World War II, represented the 29th District of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1986 to 2005. His story reflects his devotion to his hometown of Corning, and chronicles the myriad contributions of civilians and friends on that home front during the war. Former CEO of Corning Glass Works, he is cited as the "father of fiber optics" for support of research in revolutionary communications material. He says the military taught him many life lessons, including when to be free and when to be disciplined.
