For PFC Edward Duncan Cameron, known as "Dunc" to his family, D-Day was simply the beginning of a long slog through the European Theater. A rifleman who served with the Army's 1st Infantry Division, he arrived in France after being stationed in North Africa, Sicily, and England. Though his unit weathered significant losses during the invasion, the rigors of combat only intensified as they moved through France and Belgium toward Germany. Wounded in action in September, 1944, Cameron wrote to his father, "The last few weeks before I got hit were the roughest we had encountered and that includes the beach-head."
