Toni Rae King joined the Army in 1967 to follow in her relatives’ footsteps. Family tradition led her to serve, and her service expanded the circle of those she considered family: during her time in country as a female intelligence officer, her flight crew felt like true brothers to her, even though she sometimes resented being treated like a little sister. After leaving the Army due to injury, she became involved in veterans’ service organizations, and was deeply committed to educating young people about the value of military service.
