- Service History Note: The veteran flew on 11 missions when his B-17 aircraft was hit and caught fire. Additionally, the tail gunner was killed and Smith with the rest of the crew bailed out over Germany, where they were captured and held as prisoners of war (POWs) for over a year in Stalag Luft I (1944-1945).
