Shedrich Frazier joined the Army in August 1941 and was training in Texas on December 7 that year. His base immediately canceled all furloughs indefinitely. Frazier shipped out from California and spent 19 days on the Pacific Ocean en route to Sydney, Australia. His final destination was Port Morseby, New Guinea, where for three years he drove trucks for a quartermaster outfit. When he arrived, conditions were primitive, with few roads, short rations, and no ice plant to refrigerate food and beverages. His segregated unit also had to put up with a white commander who falsified reports that would have let them go home when they were eligible to do so.
