- Service History Note: Axel served from the spring of 1944 to the spring of 1946. Trained in demolition, he landed on Iwo Jima in February 1945, as part of the first Marines on the island. During the battle, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his back, head, and legs. He also lost his hearing.
