Joining the ROTC on a patriotic whim one day in college, Lieutenant Colonel Ingrid C. Lim went on to serve in both the Persian Gulf War as well as the Iraq War. In her oral history interview, she describes the "austere" living conditions and the ever-present threat of chemical warfare during the Persian Gulf War. She also contrasts the two conflicts, stating that they were very different wars, and her experiences reflect this. Her service as a psychologist during the Iraq War might not have required her to don a chemical weapon protection suit, or witness large-scale artillery firefights, as during the Persian Gulf War. Nevertheless, treating traumatized soldiers once again brought her face-to-face with the violence of war.
