  • -  Performed by Henry Reed, fiddle.
  • -  Duration: 1 minute, 38 seconds
  • -  Rendition: (2)-1-2r-1-2-1-2r-1-2r-1
  • -  Phrase Structure: ABAB' QRQ'B (abcd abc'd qrcb qrcd)
  • -  Stylistic features: A lot of syncopation.
  • -  Spoken: HENRY REED: [Laughs]
  • -  Recording chronology: 127
  • -  Related Tune(s): Poplar Pole
  • -  Henry Reed did not give the name for this tune, but he said it came from "East Virginia," and he probably acquired it during a period of his life when he was working in Floyd County, Virginia. Compare the tune he played immediately after this one, "Poplar Pole," which is similar but distinct. The simple melodic style, the tendency to assemble the tune cumulatively by varying similar phrases, and the heavy and consistent syncopation suggest African-American influence on this whole class of tunes.
