Notes

  • -  Interview with Charles "Chuck" Hardy, plant manager of Joseph Teshon, Inc., a fabric-weaving mill in Paterson, New Jersey. The interview is being conducted on September 9, 1994, in an office at the mill.
  • -  Summary of audio segment: The process of developing a fabric with a customer. Customer sends sketch of pattern; Teshon sends sketch to a designer on a commission basis; designer drafts a small part of the design--called a "trial." The trial is translated onto jacquard cards and woven; the customer is shown the sample fabric and then accepts the design or asks for modifications or abandons design. When the design is approved, the designer completes the design and the card-cutter will cut the entire set of card. At that point, the customer buys the cards and thus becomes the owner of the pattern (Teshon will not allow other customers to use this pattern). The customer then selects final colors for the design (yarns are dyed at the Teshon plant). Discussion of color selection.
