Notes

  • -  Interview with Joe Pizza, owner, Ritz Tailor and Cleaning on 21st Avenue.
  • -  Summary of audio segment: JP bought a truck, went into construction. Good for a while, then just before the Korean War, things were dropping to nothing. The big companies got the work because they had men they had to give jobs to. So Joe bought a shop, but there was no business. "But I bought the key, I knew there was no business." Paid $300. Shop was around the corner from this one. JP developed the business, but it was a struggle to pay bills. Had to feed two kids. Had no extra money, had no money to buy groceries, so ate at diners, etc. Sacrificed for two years, business was doing fine. Moved to 22nd Avenue, business was good. But then they put Route 80 in, took so many homes, cut through all the good areas here. Shut down 22nd Avenue, which had been a thriving area. But they put a barrier there, and I was cooked. Was making $65 a week. Son got a truck, started canvassing to build the business up again, but when cars don't pass anymore, couldn't make it on just regular customers.
