The Asian Division (AD) is offering an opportunity for a qualified individual at the GS-13 level to serve on a full-time, 120-day temporary promotion to the GS-14 level, OR a qualified individual at the GS-14 level (no promotion) to serve on a full-time 120-day detail as Head of the Scholarly Services Section.
The Head of the Scholarly Services Section is responsible for the daily operations of the Asian Reading Room, the Asian Division's reference services, including: supervision of reference staff, timely and accurate reference service to Congress, researchers and the general public, scholarly activities, and serving as an authority in matters within the field of Asian studies.
The incumbent will also direct the development and maintenance of the Library's Asian collections pertaining to the countries and regions, and will facilitate the use of these collections by researchers through the planning and production of scholarly programs, exhibits, seminars, and colloquies that bring attention to collections of interest to patrons and current research developments. The incumbent may be responsible for cultivating relations with potential donors, securing funds for new initiatives, acquiring new collections, and establishing new services. In addition, the incumbent may also be assigned to perform general administrative duties for the division and to serve in lieu of the Chief as required and must be able to provide administrative functions related to the staff supervised.
This position reports directly to the Chief of the Asian Division and supervises a team of ten Reference Librarians. The librarians are responsible for staffing the reference desk, and serving patrons whom use the Asian Reading Room for research.
The selected applicant must possess excellent customer service skills and have a high aptitude for supervisory tasks.

- Ability to supervise, motivate and lead a diverse workforce
- Knowledge of history, politics and literature of at least one of Asian countries or regions
- Knowledge of integrated library systems, library applications, and other information technologies
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to perform supervisory tasks in English and at least one of Asian Languages

This temporary promotion or detail will be for a 120-day period. This opportunity is open to permanent staff of the Library of Congress. The work schedule is flextime, Monday - Friday. There is a telework option for this position (may telework 2 days per week).
