The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Materials Handler Foreman. Assignments are received via oral or written instructions that indicate work to be done. The Materials Handler Foreman provides additional guidance or coordination when assignments are complex or require interaction with co-workers. Work progress is occasionally reviewed by the Materials Handler Foreman. The Materials Handler Foreman checks completed assignments to ensure that warehousing methods and procedures have been followed. The incumbent works on hard surfaces and in work areas that require stooping, standing, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Some work is to be completed at a rapid pace for long periods of time. Work is done inside and outside. Work may be done in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty or poorly lighted. The work is sometimes dirty, dusty and greasy. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises. Incumbent must be able to obtain a forklift certification. The heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Incumbent must successfully complete the bi-yearly course in Safe Industrial Truck Operation. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Duties of the position require the incumbent to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds on a recurring basis. A physical examination is required every two (2) years to perform the work of the position. After an offer of employment has been made and before commencement of duties, the selectee MUST be physically qualified by the Library’s Health Office. This position is located in the National and International Outreach (NIO), National Programs (NP), National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS/BPH), Network Division, Inventory Management Section.
