"Jurassic Park" (Universal Pictures, 1993) 126 min.

The concept of people somehow existing in the age of dinosaurs (or dinosaurs somehow existing in the age of people) has been explored in film and on television numerous times. No treatment, however, has ever been done with more skill, flair or popcorn-chomping excitement than this 1993 blockbuster. Set on a remote island where a man's toying with evolution has run amok, this Steven Spielberg classic ranks as the epitome of the summer blockbuster. "Jurassic Park" was the top public vote-getter when it was added to the National Film Registry last year.

Located between the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building, 10 First St., SE (running the length of East Capitol Street between First and Second Streets, SE), the north lawn of the Jefferson Building provides a comfortable space for people to watch the feature films. Moviegoers are welcome to bring picnics.

Join us every Thursday starting Thursday, July 11 for awesome flicks from the National Film Registry.

The series is part of the Library's annual programming theme to explore America's changemakers. It kicks off with Walt Disney’s first live-action movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and ends with the first film in which computer-generated characters interacted with human actors on screen:

July 11: Mary Poppins (1964)
July 18: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
July 25: A League of Their Own
August 1: Jaws
August 8: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
August 15: Jurassic Park
Aug. 22: Jurassic Park

Each film will feature a pre-screening concert co-presented by Washington Performing Arts. Details regarding the performances will be revealed throughout the duration of the series.
