The Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature will be presented during a symposium featuring the honorees and the winners. The symposium will be emceed by award-winning writer Grace Lin and is co-sponsored by We Need Diverse Books.

  • Grace Lin

    Grace Lin, a New York Times best-selling author/ illustrator, won the Newbery Honor for "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and the Theodor Geisel Honor for "Ling and Ting." Her novel "When the Sea Turned to Silver" was a National Book Award Finalist and her picture book, "A Big Mooncake for Little Star" was awarded the Caldecott Honor.
  • Mariko Tamaki

    Mariko Tamaki is a Canadian writer of comics and prose, and the winner of the 2020 Walter Award (Teen Category) for "Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me," with Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (illustrator).
  • Rosemary Valero-O’Connell

    Rosemary Valero-O’Connell is a Minneapolis born, Zaragoza raised cartoonist and illustrator, and the winner of the 2020 Walter Award (Teen Category) for "Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me," with Mariko Tamaki (author).
  • Elizabeth Acevedo

    Elizabeth Acevedo is the New York Times best-selling author of "The Poet X," and a recipient of the 2020 Walter Honors (Teen Category) for "With the Fire on High."
  • Akwaeke Emezi

    Akwaeke Emezi is a writer and video artist based in liminal spaces, and a recipient of the 2020 Walter Honors (Teen Category) for "Pet."
  • Padma Venkatraman

    Padma Venkatraman is the award-winning author of "A Time to Dance" and "Climbing the Stairs," and the winner of the 2020 Walter Award (Young Readers Category) for "The Bridge Home."
  • Lisa Moore Ramée

    Lisa Moore Ramée wrote her first book in second grade, and is a recipient of the 2020 Walter Honors (Young Readers Category) for "A Good Kind of Trouble."
  • Jasmine Warga

    Jasmine Warga is a writer from Cincinnati, Ohio who currently resides in the Chicago area, and is a recipient of the 2020 Walter Honors (Young Readers Category) for "Other Words for Home."
