Cécile McLorin Salvant is “one of the most daring and resourceful vocalists in jazz—or any other genre, for that matter” (Uncut). A MacArthur Fellow and recipient of the Doris Duke Award, Salvant is a visionary performer and composer, a master storyteller inspired by visual art, whose first three recordings each earned a Grammy Award for jazz vocals. In this concert she performs music from her latest project, "Ghost Song." “Disarmingly beautiful” is Downbeat’s verdict for this album, an intriguing mix of seven original songs and five covers on themes of ghosts, nostalgia and yearning. As Salvant described it, “The idea of dancing with a ghost, or a memory—I connect with that idea so much. To me, the domain of memory, of reminiscing, is a form of celebrating something that is not with you… like unrequited love. It points to how fleeting everything is.”
NOTE: Due to ongoing repairs in the Library's Coolidge Auditorium, events scheduled for that venue may need to be rescheduled for other locations. For the latest updates, you may register for the event in advance, return to this page, or subscribe to the Library's Upcoming Events email feed.
