Hailed by The Guardian as a “cellist of power and grace,” Seth Parker Woods is a visionary artist known for exhilarating concerts that reach across genres, reimagining traditional works and opening vistas to new experiences. In this solo recital he juxtaposes contemporary pieces by composers like Chinary Ung and Giacinto Scelsi with music from Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite (1973), and several new works recently composed for him. Nathalie Joachim’s Dam Mwen Yo (These Are My Ladies) is an evocation of women’s voices in Haitian culture, sampling vocal fragments, breath and speech. Winter Tendrils by Monty Adkins and Frederick Giffords’s Difficult Grace deploy electronics in expressive pieces that Woods builds into a compelling evening-length design, interwoven with movements from the solo cello suites of J.S. Bach.

Pre-concert Conversation with the Artist: 6:30pm, Whittall Pavilion

Seating will be by general admission. You will receive a confirmation of your registration by email, with information about the Library of Congress Health and Safety Protocols.
