Join Curator of Architecture Mari Nakahara for a guided tour to this remarkable research collection that spans the late 19th century to the early 2000s.
Driving through the United States from the 1960s to the early 2000s to document roadside America, architectural historian John Margolies amassed an amazing collection of postcards, travel brochures, road maps. While his colorful photographs have become well known through books and an online archive in the Prints & Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, almost unknown is his fascinating and extensive collection of travel ephemera of over 3,300 items. In addition to traditional ephemera, the collection contains advertising placemats, gas station promotions, matchbooks, sheet music, and souvenirs in scrapbooks.
