Encounters with the exemplary Danish Quartet are memorable. “The Danish play…as if they were joined on a single instrument, armed with four bows,” states The New York Times. They bring a beautiful program to the Library, performing works by Haydn, Mozart and Stravinsky to frame a trio of pieces written more than three centuries earlier by the blind Irish harper and composer Turlough O’Carolan. Playing traditional music has been a serious endeavor for the artists over their 20 years together. “Folk tunes are not just a part of our repertoire,” the artists have said, “but an important element of our identity as musicians.” Capping their concert is Franz Schubert’s transcendental last quartet, completed in the final months of the composer’s life.
