Hannigan is a formidable force at the forefront of contemporary music as both soprano and conductor, with premieres of 100 works to date. With the impeccable pianist Bertrand Chamayou, admired for performances of music both Romantic and modern, she chose a program of visionary composers for concerts at the Pierre Boulez Saal, Philharmonie de Paris, and a 10-city American tour. They are superbly matched partners in a spellbinding hourlong recital that presents piano works by Scriabin, including the incendiary “Vers la flamme,” with two song cycles Hannigan describes as “deeply spiritual, mysterious, tender and ecstatic.” Messiaen’s “Chants de terre et de ciel” is a joyous meditation on the composer’s religious faith and the birth of his son Paul. Zorn’s “Jumalattaret,” set to texts from the Finnish epic Kalevala, praises nine goddesses, women of power in Sami mythology, in a remarkable, incantatory work that challenges even Hannigan’s virtuosic vocal and dramatic gifts.

There will be no preconcert conversation for this program.
