Residents of a small desert town find themselves fighting for their lives against giant prehistoric worms. An entertaining throwback to the sci-fi creature films of the 1950s, Tremors yielded only modest box-office returns, but became a cult hit as a result of its massive success on the video rental market, which in turn spawned six direct-to-video sequels and a TV series. The film was surprisingly well received by the critics, some of which, like Roger Ebert, considered it a guilty pleasure, while others enthusiastically praised its pitch perfect balance between horror and comedy. The filming took place in Inyo County, California, around Lone Pine, which has served as a location for hundreds of westerns since the silent era, and the town of Olancha, where the elaborate set of the fictional village of “Perfection, Nevada” was built.
