Article Brazil: Child Pornography to Be Criminalized

(July 2, 2008) On May 21, 2008, the Commission of the Constitution, Justice, and Citizenship of the Brazilian Federal Senate approved a proposal for a law that criminalizes the production, publication, and sale, including on the Internet, of images involving the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents. The proposal also criminalizes the possession of such material, as well as the corruption of minors through online chat rooms. In addition, the proposal includes a provision forcing Internet service providers to keep evidence of such crimes, instead of simply erasing them from their servers as is currently the case. The proposal will now be discussed by the Commission of Human Rights, before being voted on in a full plenary session.
