Article Senegal: Adoption of Gender Parity Law

(June 7, 2010) The Senegalese Parliament recently adopted a new law requiring all political parties to introduce absolute gender parity in electoral lists for all elected representation, national or local. Lists that do not comply with the law will be void. Women represent 52% of the total population of Senegal, but are only 23% of the representatives in the National Assembly, approximately 10% of the government officials, 13% of regional council members, 20% of municipal council members, and 27% of rural council members.
