Article Angola: Constitution Will Become Available in Several Languages

(Feb. 12, 2015) On February 5, 2015, Angolan National Assembly Deputy Emílio Homem anounced that a technical commission coordinated by the Angolan Ministry of Territory Administration will prepare the translation of the Angolan Constitution into several languages. (Angola: Constituição Ganha “Réplica” em Língua Estrangeira, ANGOP (Feb. 5, 2015).)

The Constitution is in Portuguese and, according to article 19, the official language of Angola is Portuguese. (Constituição da República de Angola, 2010, DIÁRIO DA REPÚBLICA, I Serie, No. 23 (Feb. 5, 2010), Secretariat of the Council of Ministers website.) Among a number of other languages, there are six Bantu languages that are considered national languages of the country, but only Portuguese is the official language. (Languages in Angola, JUST LANDED (last visited Feb. 10, 2015).)

The Deputy further mentioned that the commission will continue to work towards the Constitution being more widely disseminated throughout the country, so that, in a short period of time, its essential parts will become available in the main languages. (Angola: Constituição Ganha “Réplica” em Língua Estrangeira, supra.)
