(Jan. 4, 2018) On December 5, 2017, a new law adjusting the age requirements for pension benefits entered into force in Italy. (Decree of December 5, 2017, Adjusting the Requirements to Access Retirement Benefits to the Increase of Life Expectancy (the Decree), GAZZETTA UFFICIALE (G.U.) (Dec. 12, 2017) (in Italian).) The Decree was enacted in accordance with a 2009 Decree-Law which provided that, beginning on January 1, 2015, the age requirements for accessing the Italian retirement system must be adjusted to reflect the increase of life expectancy, as determined by the National Statistics Institute and validated by EU authorities. Under the new legislation, beginning January 1, 2019, the age requirement for accessing retirement benefits established in Italian legislation increases by five months.
