Article Norway: Parliament Presidium Announces Reduction in Parliamentary Coronavirus Measures

(Apr. 10, 2020) On April 8, 2020, the Presidium of the Norwegian Parliament announced that, starting on April 19, 2020, it will abolish some of the measures recently instituted in response to  the COVID-19 outbreak. Specifically the Presidium announced that it, together with party leaders, have agreed to the following:

  • Starting April 19, 2020, the Norwegian Parliament will again hear nonurgent issues in Parliament.
  • Starting April 29, 2020, the question and answer session in which government ministers answer questions from the Parliament will be reintroduced.
  • The Parliament bleachers, which have been closed since March 11, 2020, will be reopened but with less capacity, requiring visitors to sit at least two meters (6.5 feet) apart, and with no visitors in the front row.

Other coronavirus measures will stay in force. For example, members will continue to meet with the minimum number of voting members allowed in the Constitution (89) until at least the end of April 2020. The working committees of the Parliament are encouraged to continue to meet digitally, either by writing or the use of videoconferencing technology. All committee travel, both domestically and internationally, remains suspended until July 1, 2020.

As of April 10, 2020, Norway reported 6,244 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 92 fatalities.
