(Aug. 11, 2020) On July 29, 2020, the Italian Council of Ministers issued a resolution extending the state of health emergency throughout the national territory until October 15, 2020. The council had originally declared a six-month state of emergency starting on January 31, 2020, thereby amending the general 12-month limit for the duration of nationwide declarations of states of emergency established in article 24(3) of Legislative Decree No. 1 of January 2, 2018.
Reiterating the health risks associated with the transmission of the coronavirus, the resolution states that “the context of the current risks imposes the continuation of extraordinary and urgent measures to adequately address possible situations of harm to the population throughout the national territory.” (Resolution para. 20.)
Consequently, provisions provided in previous legislation and regulations with regard to curbing the spread of the virus, granting government funds to distressed companies, conducting education and elections, and establishing alternative penitentiary measures will remain in effect.
