  • -  "Foundation laid in 1832 by Lt. Mansfield & Lt. Benshaw. Built of brick. Has one teir of guns in casemates and one en Barbette on each side of the four channel fronts -- Walls 7 ft. thick at bottom and 5 ft. at top and are surrounded by a wet ditch 20 ft. wide. The whole fort is intended to mount 102 guns. It now mounts (April 1862) 47 guns 1 being a 13 inch."--Page caption.
