Title
- International naval review, Hampton Roads, Virginia, 1907
Summary
- Ships of foreign countries and the U.S. Atlantic Fleet participate in the international naval review which marks the opening of the Jamestown Exposition April 26, 1907. TR, with his family and guests, had traveled from Washington aboard the Presidential yacht Mayflower. As TR passed the rows of anchored ships, flying pennants, bunting, and flags, each greeted him with a twenty-one gun salute. Panoramic shots of ships in the Hampton Roads. It is difficult to identify individual ships; however, those painted with dark colors are probably foreign vessels, with the exception of the German ships, which were given new coats of white paint in honor of the occasion. The first ship in film is one of the British armored cruisers; at ca. ft. 13 the American ship is probably the Presidential yacht Mayflower; a ship which is probably the German imperial flagship Roon is visible at ca. ft. 20. In last sequence, there are views of the monitor Canonicus; a civil war relic, she was refurbished and served as an exhibit during the exposition.
