Notes

  • -  Carbon-copy typescript, in gray binder, detailing Bernays's publicity campaign, on the eve of the 1924 presidential election, to humanize Coolidge's image by bringing a host of high-spirited actors and actresses to breakfast with him at the White House. The typescript includes the words to the campaign song "Keep Coolidge," which Al Jolson, one of the visiting actors, led all the guests in singing after breakfast. The anecdote appears, in condensed form without the campaign song , in the Bernays memoir The Biography of An Idea (1965). This occasion is memorialized in a photograph from the National Photo Company Collection, "John Drew, Al Jolson and other prominent actors with President and Mrs. Coolidge, October 17, 1924." Reproduced as facsimile page images: 11 pages.
